What is softwood timber?

In construction there are generally two types of timber;  Softwood and Hardwood. Around 80% of the timber used in construction is softwood. It is not always the case that hardwood is harder than softwood, it more depends how they are produced. Softwood comes from coniferous trees like pine and birch...these are trees that keep their leaves all year round. Softwood is normally fairly light which makes it easier to cut.
