Stability and Kiln Dried
Sawn timber is kiln dried to make the timber more stable for shipping and for use. Most sawn timber is kin dried to a moisture content of less than 24%.
As a guide sawn timber is dried to these percentages depending upon use;

Framing - less than 24%
External cladding - less than 18%
Interior lining - less than 16%
Flooring - less than 10%

Strength grading timber
Modern timber mills now sort and grade timber via computer eye or camera. The camera measures the size and frequency of knots and defects to determine the quality grade. Defects include; cracks, warping and distortion. The thickness of the timbers growth rings is also measured to determine speed of growth. In colder climates timber grows slower making it stronger than in warm climates.

The strength of a piece of timber is denoted by being given a strength class ranging C14, C16, C18, C20, C24, C27, C30, C35, C40, C45, C50
At MP Moran we sell C16 and C24 which serves most construction requirements.

All lengths of sawn timber are marked at the end with a CE stamp denoting; manufacturers name, year the grade was marked and of course its strength grade mark.
